Why Natural Toothpaste and Mouthwash is a Smart Choice

February 13, 2015 By Liz Pilotto

Currently the average consumer gets bombarded with toxins they may not be aware of. Some of these toxins are those in the toothpaste and mouthwash that we use everyday. We even let our children ingest these poisons. How much is too much? If someone asked you to put a drop of antifreeze on your tongue, would you?

Here is a list of toxic ingredients that is found in toothpaste and mouthwash:

*polyethylene – a common plastic. It does not dissolve and dental hygienist’s are finding them in the gum line.
*fluoride – highly toxic thought to prevent tooth decay. Can cause teeth to discolor and crumble. Excessive fluoride has been shown to damage the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.
*artificial coloring – can cause flare-ups of allergies. Many colorings have been shown to cause cancer when ingested or applied to the skin. Contributes to the hyperactivity in children. May suffer from hives, runny, stuffy nose or breathing difficulties.
*artificial sweetener – scientists are concerned that these sweeteners may alter brain function and behavioral changes. Aspartame could cause neurological damage in children and pass from pregnant mother to unborn child affecting brain development. Implicated in diseases such as MS and Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.
*polyethylene glycol – the active ingredient in anti-freeze. PG has systemic consequences such as brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities.
*sodium laurel sulfate – the American College of Toxicology states this substance can cause malformation in children’s eyes and may be damaging to the immune system, especially within the skin.

Is that enough information to at least clean up your mouth?

A pure, natural, yummy, non-toxic approach can be achieved with the Thieves Dental line of products:
KidScents – Slique
Dentarome Plus Toothpaste
Thieves Aroma Bright Toothpaste
Thieves Dentarom Ulta Toothpaste
Thieves Dental Floss
Thieves Fresh Essence Mouthwash

I oil-pull every morning. This is so valuable not only to healthy teeth and gums but also for pulling toxins out of the entire body. My blog, Sanodivita, has everything you need to know about oil-pulling.

Another way to make sure it’s pure is making your own toothpaste.
I purchased a glass jar from Whole Foods.
In my small cuisinart I combined:
*1 cup organic coconut oil
*1/2 cup baking soda
*1/2 tsp. or a few drops stevia
*15 drops Young Living Peppermint Essential Oil
*15 drops Young Living Spearmint Essential Oil
*15 drops Young Living Orange Essential Oil (to whiten teeth)
Add more or less of the oils or any essential oils that you prefer.
Children may enjoy the citrus essential oils.
Of course Thieves is an excellent choice for achieving excellent dental health.
Wintergreen is another minty flavor.

Mouthwash can be made simply by adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil to a couple ounces of distilled water. This can be swished around in the mouth and even swallowed as you would with the thieves mouthwash.

…and of course a Doggie Toothpaste Recipe from K9instinct.com:
* 1 cup unrefined
* 1/2 tsp. turmeric
* 1/2 tsp. kelp
* 1/8 tbs. dried parsley flakes
Place all ingredients in a food processor and blend well. Keep in refrigerator.
Brush the teeth with a soft bristle toothbrush or (if you dare) your finger.
Warm up the toothpaste before you brush. NO MICROWAVE!

THE POWERFUL INFLUENCE of AROMAS in BOTH MIND and BODY

October 28, 2014 By Liz Pilotto

When a fragrance is inhaled, the odor molecules travel up the nose where they are trapped by olfactory membranes. The essential oil odor molecules trigger electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb of the brain. Impulses are sent to gustatory, (taste sensation perceived) amygdala, (emotions are stored) and other parts of the limbic system of the brain. Because the limbic system is directly connected to parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, hormone balance, essential oils can have a profound physiological and psychological effects.
The sense of smell is directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain, the emotional control center. Anxiety, depression, fear, anger, and joy all emanate from the region.
Special fragrance can evoke memories and emotions.
The limbic lobe can also directly activate the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is one of the most important parts of the brain, acting as our hormonal control center. The production of growth hormones, sex hormones, thyroid hormones, and neurotransmitters such as serotonin are all governed by the hypothalamus or master gland.
Essential oils through fragrance and molecular structure can directly stimulate the limbic lobe and hypothalamus. Inhalation of essential oils may be used to combat stress emotional trauma, and hormones. (Content donated by Essential Oils Desk Reference).

Essential oils are highly aromatic; therefore, many of the benefits can be obtained by simply inhaling them.
One of the most simple ways to inhale an essential oil is to use an aromatic diffuser.
Young Living has many different types of diffusers to fit your needs. Some vaporize the water and oil to disperse into the air, others nebulize only the oil and disperse the oil molecules into the air.
Essential oils, when diffused, can be the best air filtration system in the world.
They will:
* Purify by removing metallic particles and toxins from the air.
* Increase atmospheric oxygen.
* Increase ozone and negative ions in the house, which inhibit bacteria growth.
* Destroy odors such as cigarettes and animals.
* Fill the air with a fresh, herbal aromatic scent. (Aromatic means to diffuse, breathe, or inhale. Also put on skin.)
For the person they may:
* Relax the body, relieve tension, and clear the mind.
* Help weight management.
* Improve concentration, alertness, and mental clarity.
* Stimulate neurotransmitters.
* Stimulate secretion of endorphins.
* Stimulate growth hormone production and receptivity.
* Improve the secretion of IgA antibodies that fight candida.
* Improve digestion function.
* Improve hormonal balance.
* Relieve headaches.

Start diffusing 15-30 minutes a day. Increase as you become accustomed to the oils and recognize their effects.

Place the diffuser high in a room so that the oil mist falls through the air.

Do not mix essential oil BLENDS. This may alter the smell and the therapeutic benefit of a certain blend you may chose. A single essential oil can be added to an essential oil blend when diffusing. I love adding the citrus oils to the essential oil blends when I diffuse. They are refreshing, uplifting and give an overall sense of well being.

Some of my favorite blends are:
Clarity, Release, Thieves, Stress Away, Peace & Calming, Mister, Abundance, Believe, Christmas Spirit, Evergreen Essence, JuvaFlex, Joy, R.C., Harmony.

I will add any one of the citrus oils to these essential oil blends. I especially love lime.
Another favorite of mine to add is Patchouli.
During the cold and flu season it feels good to add Eucalyptus.
If I feel like I need a wake up call I throw in a few drops of Peppermint.
Elemi is a reasonably priced oil to use as a single that is from the same family as Frankincense and Myrrh.

I will also blend 2-4 single oils on my own that I love. Usually always making one of them a citrus oil.
* Lavender-Geranium-Lime
* Eucalyptus-Hinoki-Lemon-IdahoBlueSpruce

* Clove-Lemon-Lime

* Basil-Lemon-Grapefruit

* Frankincense-Lavender-Patchouli-CitruFresh

* Patchouli-YlangYlang-Grapefruit-Lime

* White Pine-Lime-YlangYlang-Geranium

* IdahoBalsamFir-Bergamot-Tangerine

Create your own aromatic frenzy and you may find yourself joyous, happy, laughing, full of light and love in a healthy home.

DEHYDRATION

September 12, 2014 By Liz Pilotto

In the  book, You’re Not Sick You’re Thirsty by Dr. F. Batmanghelidj, Dr. Batmanghelidj claims if you wait until your mouth is a dry to take a drink you are already beyond dehydrated. While a prisoner of war for 2 years he had the ability to relate disease to dehydration. In treating his fellow inmates with just water he observed he could relieve symptoms from disease by giving the patient proper hydration.

Waters plays a role in:
*Heart Disease and Stroke – water to help prevent clogging of arteries.
*Infection – water to increase efficiency of immune system.
*Depression – water to help the body naturally replenish serotonin.
*Sleep Disorders – water for the production of nature’s sleep regulator, melatonin.
*Lack of Energy – water generates electrical and magnetic energy in every body cell, for a natural power boost.
*Addiction – water to help eliminate addictive urges.
*Osteoporosis – water aids to strong bone formation.
*Leukemia and Lymphoma – water normalizes blood manufacturing systems to aid in prevention of different cancers.
*Attention Deficit – a well-hydrated brain is continually energized to imprint new information in its memory banks.

The body is 75% water, 25% solid matter. The brain is 85% water and extremely sensitive to dehydration. Adequate hydration of the body might be the best insurance against premature aging, disease and early loss of our different sensory systems.

You may be dehydrated if you have little or no urine or it is dark in color.
You are feeling fatigued, sleepy or have no energy.
You are suffering from a headache or are confused or dizzy.
You are crying and have no tears.

Stay hydrated with at least 8 cups of water each day.
Flavor the water with a couple of drops of Young Living citrus oils, peppermint, spearmint, or ginger to name a few.

Keep the toxins flushed out of your body with lots of water.
Lubricate your joints and protect your organs with water.
Control body temperature with water.
Create saliva with proper hydration.

Eat foods that have a high water content. Some of those are tomatoes, greens, melons, berries, celery, broccoli, cabbage.

Dehydration may play a a role in obesity. By not drinking enough water the cells become depleted of their ready energy. They then depend on food energy instead of water. The body then stores fat and uses protein and starch reserves because it is easier to break them down than stored fat.
So, give your body what it needs, WATER!
A few great weight loss tips using Young Living Products:
Aroma plays a big part in satisfying hunger. Have a cup of SLIQUE tea before a meal.
Drink a glass of water with drops of YL Grapefruit added to it. Grapefruit helps curb your appetite.
Do a shot of NingXia Red with 8 drops of YL Grapefuit and 3 drops of Ocotea.
Ocotea keeps blood sugar level and helps curb the appetite.
Make the first thing you eat be a bowl of veggie soup.
The SLIQUE line of products offers many solutions to dropping pounds.
